Which test do I need?

Eye Test Guide

Not sure which eye test you need? Your eye doctor chooses tests based on your symptoms, health history and examination. Most are quick and painless.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

A non-contact scan that creates detailed cross-section images of the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it to check glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal swelling, or unexplained changes in vision.

OCTA (OCT Angiography)

A non-invasive OCT scan that maps the tiny blood vessels in the retina without an injection.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it when monitoring diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular problems, or other circulation changes.

Visual Field Test

A test that measures how well you see to the sides while looking straight ahead.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it to diagnose or monitor glaucoma, optic nerve conditions, stroke-related vision loss, or certain neurological concerns.

Fundus Photography

A camera takes detailed colour photographs of the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels at the back of the eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it to document and monitor diabetic eye disease, high blood pressure changes, retinal conditions, or optic nerve changes.

Corneal Topography

A painless map of the curve and shape of the front surface of your eye, called the cornea.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it before LASIK or cataract surgery, when assessing keratoconus, or if contact lenses are uncomfortable or vision is irregular.

Pachymetry

A quick measurement of corneal thickness, usually using a small probe or a non-contact device.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it during a glaucoma assessment, before laser vision correction, or when evaluating corneal disease.

Biometry

A measurement of the length and optical dimensions of your eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it before cataract surgery to help select the most suitable intraocular lens power.

B-scan Ultrasound

An ultrasound that uses sound waves to create an image of structures inside and behind the eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it when the retina cannot be clearly seen because of a dense cataract, bleeding, or other cloudiness, or when assessing retinal detachment.

Eye Pressure Test (Tonometry)

A test that measures the pressure inside your eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it as part of a routine eye examination or when checking for glaucoma and other pressure-related eye conditions.

Refraction

A vision test using lenses to find the prescription that makes your vision clearest.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it if you have blurred vision, headaches, trouble reading, or need glasses or contact lenses updated.

Slit-Lamp Examination

A microscope with a bright light that lets the doctor closely examine the front and sometimes the back of your eye.

When a doctor may recommend it

A doctor may recommend it during a comprehensive eye examination or when assessing redness, pain, dry eye, cataract, infection, injury, or contact lens concerns.

Why Early Eye Care Matters

Prevent Permanent Damage

Many eye conditions — glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment — cause irreversible vision loss if untreated. Early intervention preserves sight.

Better Treatment Outcomes

Conditions like amblyopia in children and diabetic retinopathy respond far better to treatment when caught early. Regular screening is essential.

Lower Treatment Costs

Early-stage treatment is almost always simpler and less expensive than managing advanced disease. Annual eye exams are a worthwhile investment.
